Autumn through Spring
Set the Scene: The Quiet South - Sussex Castles, Coast, Cliffs, Countryside & the Great West Way®
15-Night Journey
There is an older, quieter England beyond the reach of the hurried traveller: an England of castles reflected in still water, white cliffs rising above the Channel, and country lanes that lead from vineyard slopes to honey-stoned villages. Here, history is not simply something to observe. It unfolds in the company of those who know its stories, in the work of local makers, and in the quiet pleasure of taking your time.
This journey traces a gentle arc through England’s south, from the welcoming calm of South Kensington to the villages and coast of Sussex, the shores of the Solent, and the countryside along the Great West Way®. Distinctive hotels anchor each chapter, while private guides, thoughtful encounters, and leisurely meals bring the places between them to life. Your chauffeur takes care of the road; you are free to settle into the view.
Begin with a personal airport welcome and a Private chauffeur-guide to The Kensington, where the first evening asks little of you. Refresh after the flight, enjoy a quiet meal, and let the journey begin with rest rather than haste. After breakfast, London gives way to the countryside. At Scotney Castle, a privately Blue Badge Guided visit and lunch introduce the world of gardens, old stone, and layered histories that lies ahead, before you continue to The Star in Alfriston.
In Sussex, the landscape moves between drama and intimacy. The Seven Sisters draw your gaze toward the sea; at Rathfinny, a wine tasting and leisurely lunch offer time to savour the countryside in another way. With a private Blue Badge guide, discover Bodiam Castle and the historic streets of Rye, where the pleasure lies as much in the stories as in the setting. These days balance discovery with the comforts of a village stay: an unhurried breakfast, a welcoming table, and somewhere familiar to return to each evening.
Turn west through Arundel, where a privately guided castle visit, a stroll through the historic town, and lunch make the journey itself part of the experience. Beyond lies Chewton Glen, where three nights invite you to settle into the pleasures of country-house living. Here, the hotel becomes a destination in its own right: slow breakfasts, restorative spa hours, garden walks, and afternoons that need no particular purpose. Your private chauffeur-guide remains at your disposal, bringing the freedom to follow a coastal road, linger in a village, or set out simply for the pleasure of the drive. With thoughtful local suggestions prepared for your stay, the days remain yours to shape, or to leave beautifully unplanned.
As you leave Hampshire, pause among the vines at Bluestone Vineyards. A private local guided vineyard walk, a glass of Premier Rosé, and a guided tasting lead naturally into a picnic, afternoon tea, or charcuterie board. There is no need to hurry away: this is a moment to enjoy the landscape before continuing to The Manor House at Castle Combe.
Four nights at The Manor House in Castle Combe open a chapter of honey-stoned villages, romantic ruins, and personal discoveries. With your private Blue Badge guide, explore the southern Cotswolds through historic streets, quiet country roads, and the stories behind the familiar beauty. Castle Combe and nearby Corsham bring this landscape into focus, revealing the character of places best appreciated slowly, in good company, and on foot.
Another day carries you into the Wye Valley where the journey takes on a different atmosphere. With a local and regionally private guide, discover the evocative ruins of Tintern Abbey and the imposing walls of Chepstow Castle, linked by winding roads, a historic village, and stories of life along the Welsh border. Lunch at a characterful country inn offers a leisurely pause in a day shaped as much by the landscape between the landmarks as by the places themselves.
At Witchmark Distillery, the story turns to flavour, fragrance, and the pleasure of creating. Discover the craft behind the spirits through a guided tour and tasting, then follow the interest that calls to you: candle making, stone carving, or distilling your own gin. A light lunch and a selected bottle to take home complete the experience, with Gin School guests also carrying away their own personally labelled creation. Between discoveries, return to the familiar comforts of The Manor House and the quiet beauty of Castle Combe.
The return to London has a final country-house chapter of its own. Arrive at Waddesdon Manor before public opening for a private curator-led visit, followed by a private Rothschild wine tasting and lunch. It is a farewell to the countryside in keeping with the journey: personal, richly storied, and enjoyed without haste.
Then Mayfair welcomes you to The Connaught. A private National Gallery tour, shaped around a subject of your choosing, brings your own curiosity into the closing days. Beyond it, London remains yours, to browse, explore, linger over lunch, or settle into an evening at the bar. Finally, your private chauffeur returns you to the airport, bringing fifteen nights of vineyards, castles, cliffs, countryside, and personal discoveries to a graceful close.

Your Sussex chapter unfolds through privately guided castle visits, medieval towns, coastal landscapes, and the region's emerging wine culture. Your first evening begins with a welcome dinner at The Star, with up to US$450 per room to enjoy as you wish, including the restaurant’s wine pairing menu, setting the tone for four nights of unhurried discovery.
Scotney Castle & the Kentish Countryside
Your journey into Sussex begins with a privately guided visit to Scotney Castle, where romantic ruins rise from an island surrounded by a picturesque moat.
Accompanied by your specialist Blue Badge guide, discover the estate's rich history, beautiful landscaped gardens, and the relationship between its medieval ruins and later country house.
A leisurely countryside lunch completes the experience before your journey continues toward the South Downs and your arrival at The Star.
Bodiam Castle & the Medieval Streets of Rye
Step into medieval England with a privately Blue Badge guided exploration of Bodiam Castle, one of the country's most evocative moated fortresses. Your Blue Badge guide brings the castle's story to life, revealing its origins, defensive architecture, and the lives of those who inhabited this remarkable medieval stronghold.
The journey winds onward to Rye, where cobbled lanes, timber-framed buildings, and historic inns preserve the character of an ancient trading citadel. Walk through its atmospheric streets with your guide, discovering the stories of merchants, maritime trade, and centuries of smuggling lore woven into the town's fabric, paired with an unhurried pub lunch.
The Seven Sisters & the South Downs Coast
Sussex reveals its breathtaking coastal beauty along the magnificent Seven Sisters, where sweeping white chalk cliffs rise above the English Channel and rolling green countryside stretches toward the horizon.
Following breakfast, your private driver guide chauffeur takes you through the picturesque South Downs to one of England's most remarkable coastlines. Enjoy panoramic viewpoints, the winding Cuckmere River, and the dramatic scenery of Cuckmere Haven, with time to pause and appreciate the landscape at an unhurried pace.
For lunch, we recommend The Eight Bells, an award-winning country pub tucked into the picturesque village of Jevington. Seasonal Sussex ingredients, thoughtfully prepared dishes, and the charm of a traditional village setting offer a delicious pause after your morning along the coast.
The remainder of the day belongs entirely to you. Return to The Star to relax, wander Alfriston's historic lanes and independent shops, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of your countryside retreat.re.
Lewes: Antique Treasures & Timeless Sussex Charm
Following a leisurely breakfast at The Star, your private driver guide chauffeur takes you through the Sussex countryside to Lewes, a historic market town celebrated for its independent spirit, centuries-old architecture, and wonderfully eclectic shopping.
Along Cliffe High Street, antique shops reveal collections of vintage jewellery, silver, porcelain, decorative furnishings, and curiosities waiting to be discovered. Browse the treasures at Lewes Antiques Centre, wander through the town's independent bookshops, and explore The Needlemakers, a characterful former factory now home to an assortment of artisan boutiques and independent makers.
For lunch, we recommend, The White Hart, a historic High Street inn associated with Thomas Paine, offers a welcoming setting for seasonal British cooking. Enjoy a relaxed meal, perhaps a comforting traditional pie followed by a classic English dessert, with time to linger over a glass of wine.
The afternoon belongs entirely to you. Continue discovering Lewes's galleries and independent shops, enjoy a quiet coffee, or return to The Star with your private driver guide chauffeur for a restful afternoon in Alfriston.
A day devoted to the simple pleasures of English village and town life, without a timetable to follow.
Arundel Castle & Historic Town
As your Sussex stay draws to a close, your journey continues west toward Hampshire, with a memorable stop in the historic market town of Arundel.
Dominating the landscape above the River Arun, Arundel Castle is one of England's most impressive historic residences, with centuries of architecture, aristocratic heritage, and beautifully maintained gardens.
Accompanied by your Blue Badge guide, explore the castle's remarkable history and discover the character of the surrounding town, including its historic streets, independent shops, and architectural landmarks.
A leisurely lunch completes your Arundel experience before your chauffeur continues to Chewton Glen, where the next chapter of your journey begins.
Arundel Castle opens seasonally, from late March to October. For journeys outside these months, we arrange an alternative historic house visit.
Art & the Bloomsbury Connection
For guests with an interest in art, literature, and British cultural history, Charleston offers an exceptional opportunity to explore the creative world of the Bloomsbury Group.
Once the country home of artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Charleston became an important gathering place for writers, artists, and intellectuals whose ideas helped shape modern British culture.
Its richly decorated interiors, distinctive artistic heritage, and changing exhibitions offer a fascinating cultural complement to Sussex's castles and countryside.
This optional private experience can be incorporated into your stay according to your interests and preferred pace, with arrangements and any additional costs confirmed before booking.
Lots More To Discover
Additional experiences can be shaped around the interests that matter most to you, from art and literature to gardens, history, gastronomy, and village life. Thoughtfully selected local recommendations accompany your stay, leaving you free to follow what appeals in the moment.
Days 6–8 | The Hampshire Coast
Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa — Three Nights
Woodland, Water & Room to Exhale
As the discoveries of Sussex give way to the landscapes of Hampshire, the journey enters a gentler chapter. Ancient woodland, open heathland, and the nearby coast create a beautiful setting for three nights at Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa.
Here, the pace deliberately softens. Settle into the comforts of your country-house retreat, wander the estate's beautiful grounds, or spend a leisurely afternoon enjoying the spa and gardens.
Beyond the hotel, the New Forest and the neighbouring landscapes of Hampshire and Dorset invite exploration without a fixed schedule. Your private chauffeur remains at your disposal for scenic countryside drives, visits to charming villages, and spontaneous discoveries along the coast.

Additional private guides, special admissions, and bespoke experiences may also be arranged in advance.
Or remain at Chewton Glen and enjoy the estate at leisure: a slow breakfast, time in the spa, walks through the grounds, and an afternoon entirely your own.
Did You Know? | An Ancient New Forest Tradition
Each autumn, the New Forest celebrates a centuries-old tradition known as pannage.
During this seasonal practice, local commoners release pigs into the forest to forage for fallen acorns and beech mast. The tradition plays an important role in protecting the area's free-roaming ponies and cattle, for which consuming large quantities of acorns can be dangerous.
This remarkable custom offers a glimpse into the living heritage of the New Forest, where traditional land management continues to shape the countryside.
The dates vary each year, and sightings are never guaranteed, but the tradition remains one of the region's most distinctive autumn stories.

During your stay, a full-day experience takes you beyond the familiar sightseeing routes and into the Wye Valley.
With a knowledgeable local guide, explore the evocative ruins of Tintern Abbey and the imposing walls of Chepstow Castle, linked by countryside drives and stories that bring the landscape into focus. Along the way, discover a historic village and pause for lunch at a characterful country inn.
There is time to look closely, ask questions, and enjoy the places between the headline stops. The day follows a coherent story through medieval architecture, borderland history, and the landscapes that connect them.
The day’s placement within your stay is arranged around your travel dates and the wider itinerary, leaving the remaining days comfortably balanced.
The Southern Cotswolds | Villages, Stone & Stories
Accompanied by your private Blue Badge guide, discover the southern Cotswolds through historic villages, traditional architecture, and the stories that give the countryside its character.
Looking beyond the picturesque streets to discover the details and histories behind the village’s enduring appeal. Continue to Corsham, where the experience moves from village intimacy to the character of a historic market town.
Your guide connects the places through conversation and storytelling, with time to notice the buildings, follow a quiet street, and pause over the details that catch your attention. Private chauffeur transport links the discoveries, leaving you free to enjoy the countryside between them.
After approximately three hours of privately guided exploration, return to The Manor House with the remainder of the day yours to enjoy.
An intimate introduction to one of England’s most beloved landscapes.
Witchmark Distillery: Spirit, Scent & Stone
At Witchmark Distillery in Wiltshire, a historic barn becomes the setting for an encounter with flavour, craftsmanship, and the stories behind the name.
Begin with a guided distillery tour, discovering how local barley and limestone-filtered water contribute to the whisky-making process, and how neutral grain spirit forms the foundation of the distillery’s gins and vodka. A guided tasting introduces a selection of new-make spirit, gins, and vodka, with time for questions and conversation about the production methods and distinctive flavours.
Then turn from discovery to creation with one experience selected before your visit. In a candle-making workshop, explore how essential oils and layers of fragrance come together to create a balanced scent. In a stone-carving class, discover the meanings and geometry of the distillery’s original witch marks before carving your own design in Chilmark stone or slate. At Gin School, choose your botanicals and distil on a personal copper still, then enjoy your creation in a G&T or cocktail before taking home a labelled 70cl bottle of your bespoke gin.
A light lunch and a selected bottle of Witchmark gin or vodka to take home complete the visit. Guests choosing Gin School receive an additional 70cl bottle of their own bespoke gin, complete with a personalised label.
Returning to The Manor House
Between discoveries, The Manor House provides a familiar place to return to. Enjoy the village, settle into a leisurely meal, and let the setting become part of the experience rather than simply the backdrop to it.
This chapter brings together different ways of knowing a place: through its stories, its makers, its flavours, and the traces of those who came before.
Waddesdon Manor: A Grand Farewell to the Countryside
On departure for London, your countryside journey has one final chapter. Detour off the route to arrive at Waddesdon Manor before public opening for a private curated tour, discovering the house in the quieter hours before the day’s visitors arrive.
A private Rothschild wine tasting continues the experience, followed by lunch and time to savour this final country-house setting. It is a fitting transition between the intimacy of Castle Combe and the elegance of your London finale.
Your private chauffeur guide then continues to The Connaught in Mayfair, where the journey’s closing days unfold.
